Mark Weil, CFP®
Founder & Wealth Advisor
I’ve always been a curious person with an entrepreneurial spirit. I first learned about investing from my grandfather, Max Werth. When I was 10 years old, I remember him telling me about the stocks he owned and showing me how to read the stock tables in the Wall Street Journal. He explained the idea of dividends and how those were a part of his retirement plan. He fueled my desire to learn more about the financial markets.
My father, Richard Weil, a tax and estate planning attorney, has an incredible work ethic and desire for knowledge that has made a huge impact on me. He brought planning discussions to our dinner table. He would share different tax and estate planning strategies that he was working on with his clients, and explained why they were important. I never realized I was actually paying attention, but as I got older I realized those dinner table lectures had sunk in.
During college, I spent a summer as a market reporter at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) and got hooked on trading and the markets. After graduating college, I went to work as a “runner” on the trading floor. I soon realized that I wanted to pursue a career in the markets, so I took my savings and bought a seat at the Mid-American Exchange at the age of 22. A year later I became a member of the CME and spent the next two decades trading and practicing risk management for my own accounts. I quickly learned that trading and investing required a disciplined approach. That disciplined approach allowed me to survive and thrive during calm and volatile markets, including the dot-com crash, 9/11, and the Great Recession, to name a few.
After hanging up my trading jacket, I re-examined my choices. By planning, preserving, and growing for my future, I was now able to decide what choices I wanted to make. I enrolled in the Financial Planning program at DePaul University and passed the CFP® exam. Prior to starting Werth Weil Wealth Management, I was a wealth advisor with another Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) in Deerfield, IL.
I live in Deerfield with my wife Meredith and our two daughters. We have a three year old Maltipoo named Madden. When I am out of the office I enjoy traveling and cooking with my family, playing golf, softball, and paddle ball. I serve on the board of the North Suburban YMCA.
